How this works (the honest bit).
This is our assumption rather than a measurement. Daily showering is a recent habit and is nowhere near universal: in much of the world washing is done with a bucket, a cloth or a shared facility, and in some places not daily at all. We assume about 60 per cent of people shower on a given day, for about eight minutes. That puts roughly 27 million people mid-shower at any moment. Water use assumes a very rough global average of 60 litres per shower, which is far higher than a bucket wash and far lower than a long power shower. Every figure on this page is a model built from population data, each country's local clock and the assumptions above. It is an estimate, it moves every second, and at least one of them is certainly true.
